North Kalimantan is the newest province in Kalimantan, Indonesia, officially established on October 25, 2012. It is located in the northern part of the island of Borneo and shares borders with Malaysia to the north and East Kalimantan to the south, west, and east. Here's a description of North Kalimantan covering various aspects:

Geography and Natural Attractions:

North Kalimantan boasts a diverse natural landscape, including lush rainforests, mighty rivers, and beautiful coastal areas. The province is home to the Kayan Mentarang National Park, which is known for its rich biodiversity, including rare and endemic species. The park offers opportunities for wildlife spotting, trekking, and exploring pristine rainforest ecosystems. The Derawan Islands, part of the province's coastal area, are renowned for their stunning coral reefs, clear waters, and vibrant marine life, attracting snorkelers and scuba divers from around the world.

Native People and Culture:

The predominant native ethnic group in North Kalimantan is the Dayak, with subgroups such as the Bulungan, Tidung, Murut, and Bahau. The Dayak people have a deep connection with their natural surroundings and maintain a close relationship with the rivers and forests. They have a rich cultural heritage, which is reflected in their traditional ceremonies, arts, crafts, music, and dances. Visitors to North Kalimantan can witness cultural performances, visit Dayak longhouses, and learn about the unique traditions and beliefs of the indigenous communities.

Traditional Houses:

One of the iconic features of North Kalimantan is the traditional Dayak longhouse, known as "rumah betang." These longhouses serve as communal living spaces for extended families and are built on stilts. They have a distinct architectural style, often adorned with intricate carvings and colorful decorations. Visitors can experience the traditional way of life by staying in homestays or participating in community-based tourism initiatives, allowing them to immerse themselves in the local culture and learn about the traditional architecture firsthand.

Old Traditions and Festivals:

North Kalimantan is renowned for its vibrant traditional festivals and ceremonies. One notable celebration is the "Sembahyangan Tiwah" ceremony, which is practiced by the Dayak Ngaju people. This elaborate ceremony involves offerings, prayers, and rituals to honor the deceased and ensure their safe passage to the afterlife. Another significant event is the "Hudoq Festival," a mask festival celebrated by the Dayak Kenyah and Kayan communities. It showcases traditional dances, music, and colorful masks, symbolizing the harmonious relationship between humans and nature.

Culinary Delights:

North Kalimantan offers a diverse array of culinary delights, influenced by its multicultural population and proximity to the sea. Seafood dishes are prominent, with fresh fish, prawns, and crabs being popular choices. Traditional Dayak cuisine often features ingredients sourced from the forest, such as wild boar, deer, and various edible plants. A traditional Dayak delicacy is "ulap doyo," which consists of raw fish marinated in lime juice and spices. Visitors can savor these unique flavors and explore the local markets to experience the region's culinary heritage.
